To
understand Sensex and Nifty, first we have to understand about the stock exchange.
Basically in
India, there are two main stock exchange,
- Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)
- National Stock Exchange (NSE)
Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE):
- Bombay Stock Exchange located at Dalal Street, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Bombay Stock Exchange is India’s first and also Asia’s oldest stock exchange.
- Bombay Stock Exchange was established in 1875.
- Bombay Stock Exchange’s total market is $2.1 trillion on as March 2019.
- Over 5400 companies are listed on BSE.
- Bombay Stock Exchange is the world’s 10th largest stock exchange in 2019.
- To keep track record on companies' stock price an, index is used for BSE its index is Sensex.
Sensex:
Sensex is
made from two words,
Sensitive + Index = Sensex
Sensex is
the index of the Bombay Stock Exchange. Sensex consisting of different sectors 30 well
established and good track record companies.
- The base year of Sensex is 1978-79.
- The base value of Sensex is 100.
Sensex is
the one type of indicator for the stock market.
If Sensex increases
it means that most of the major companies listed on BSE, their stock price also
increases.
If Sensex
fall it means that most of the major companies listed on BSE, their stock price
also falls.
Example:
Recently
during the coronavirus in Feb 2020, Sensex making a peak of 42,273.87 points
and it’s crashed over -38% on 23 March 2020 to 25,638.9 points.

National Stock Exchange (NSE):
- NSE located at Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- NSE was established in year 1992 to end the monopoly of BSE in the stock exchange.
- NSE is the first dematerialized electronic exchange in India.
- NSE’s total market cap is $2.27 trillion in April 2018.
- More than 2000 companies are listed on NSE.
- NSE is the world’s 11th largest stock exchange in 2019.
- To keep track record on companies' stock price an index is used for NSE, its index is Nifty or Nifty 50.
Nifty 50:
Nifty is
also called as Nifty 50.
Nifty is made from two words,

Nifty is the
index of the National Stock Exchange. Nifty consisting of different sectors 50 well

- The base value of 1000.
- Nifty is owned and managed by Indian index services and products (IISL).

If Nifty
increases it means that most of the major companies listed on NSE, their stock
price also increases.

falls it means that most of the major companies listed on NSE, their stock price
